Copenhagen Classic in a new development
On the busy Marielundvej in Herlev in a building that houses offices and companies, we find on the first floor Copenhagen Classic, a company that has made it its specialty to buy used Danish furniture classics and sell them on to new homes all over the world.
The story of Copenhagen Classic starts 18 years ago in Sønderborg, when Søren Stage, who previously ran a large photo chain, becomes a partner in an auction company. Out of this grows the idea of starting his own company and creating a new sales concept for used design furniture. However, it soon turns out that what the customers demand most is simply trades that, in addition to being competent and fair, are also fast. This inspires Søren Stage, and he moves from southern Jutland to the capital, and Copenhagen-Classic is born.
In 2016, Søren Stage's son, Anders Stage, joined the company. They both have direct contact with customers, and Anders Stage has the special responsibility for IT, marketing and logistics, while Søren Stage takes care of purchasing, administration and international purchasing connections.
And it is clear that father and son have successfully created a business. We meet the two in the showroom, which has just now been expanded to a full 1800 m2.
“Yes, we have grown out of our former showroom. A new IT and marketing plan has made our customer base grow significantly and our inventory has simply grown," says Søren Stage, "but the most important thing is that the added square meters give us the opportunity to create a more professional showroom, where we in the regular opening hours can present a selection of our most popular designs. When a customer is interested in a specific item, we arrange the visit in advance, so we are sure that the right item is ready in the showroom when the customer walks in the door. ”
(Opening hours - Always only by prior arrangement - weekdays - 10 am - 4 pm).
In recent years, interest in vintage design furniture, art, lighting has increased dramatically. Even the very young are crazy about the Danish classics, but what gets e.g. a teenager to wish for a vintage piece of furniture as a gift?
“The furniture classics from the years 1930-1970 are popular for several reasons. "Think about,” says Søren Stage with enthusiasm in his voice, “Some of these things have been used and enjoyed by people for decades, and the passage of time has only made them more beautiful. And in addition, these pieces of furniture take their value with them when they are carried out the door here, so they will always be able to be resold again at a good price if you want to get rid of them.”
And Søren Stage adds, “I experience that the growing climate and environmental awareness has made many people want a showdown with the buy-and-throw-away culture. We have gradually had enough of the mass-produced and anonymous and prefer quality that lasts.”
Despite the fact that Copenhagen Classic has buyers based throughout Europe and a large network here in Denmark, it can be difficult to get enough furniture. Therefore, Copenhagen Classic also has a "waiting list" website. Any salespeople can go in and see what is in demand.
“Many happy buyers and sellers have come out of this.” says Søren Stage.
Copenhagen Classic is not the only place where you can sell and buy classic Danish design today, but the company thrives and is today one of the absolute largest and leaders in its field.
"That we are one of the biggest does not necessarily mean that we are also one of the best, but we must do something right," says Søren Stage with a certain amount of Jutland modesty, "we strive to keep a low cost level and this means, together with our experience and our world wide clientele, that we can always provide the best prices to both sellers and buyers. But first and foremost, we are driven by a great passion for what we do. Work and leisure may merge and we do not count working hours. What counts for Copenhagen Classic are the many satisfied customers!”
